Investigation into water-ski death

09:07 am on 7 January 2009

A Maritime Safety investigation will begin on Wednesday into how a nine-year-old girl was killed while water skiing on Lake Taupo.

She was run over by a boat after falling off her skis near Two Mile Bay Beach on Tuesday, as her parents tried to reach her in their boat.

The driver of the boat has been interviewed by the police, who say it is too early to say whether criminal charges will be laid.

The girl was holidaying in the area with her family.

The Taupo Harbourmaster says he is worried that more people may be killed on the busy lake.

Phillip King told Summer Report the lake has been very busy this summer, with sometimes as many as a thousand boats at a time on the water.

He says patrols have been increased this year, but staff have had to speak to a lot of people about speeding on the water.
