Keith Park statue to be placed in Trafalgar Square

20:33 pm on 8 May 2009

A temporary statue of Sir Keith Park - the New Zealander who co-ordinated the air defence of Britain during the Second World War - will be erected in Trafalgar Square in London.

The statue will be placed on the fourth plinth surrounding Nelson's Column for six months later this year before being moved to a permanent home in Waterloo Place.

The decision by the Westminister City Council follows several years of campaigning by businessman Terry Smith. He says the final position could not be better.
