A survey on youth wellbeing in Christchurch shows understanding young people will be crucial for the earthquake-hit city's rebuild.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority led the Youth Wellbeing Survey, gathering the views of more than 3000 people aged 12 to 24 in the greater Christchurch region.

The survey was released on Thursday and shows the biggest issues for youth since the region's earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 have been the loss of places to relax with friends or play sport.

CERA chief executive Roger Sutton said the amount stress young people are under has been highlighted and the biggest issues for them have been the loss of places to relax with friends or play sport.

Mr Sutton said 70 percent of those surveyed said they have lost access to these places.

Youth Affairs Minister Nikki Kaye said the Canterbury Youth Initiative Fund, announced on Thursday, would contribute $100,000 towards initiatives for young Cantabrians.

Ms Kaye said the fund would address issues such as the development of spaces and places, emotional well-being, and future plans and prospects.

The minister hoped the fund would get young people more involved in city life.
