Covid-19: Updates from New Zealand and around the world on 2 May

The Middlemore Foundation is working with the Send Help Spread Hope Appeal to provide food, blankets, nappies and sanitary packs to the elderly, disabled, families and those with underlying health conditions.

As Covid-19 spreads around the world, it can be daunting keeping up with the information. For RNZ, our responsibility is to give you verified, up to the minute, trustworthy information to help you make decisions about your lives and your health. We'll also be asking questions of officials and decision makers about how they're responding to the virus. Our aim is to keep you informed.

The foundation's chief executive, Sandra Gange, said those who were in need had been left extremely isolated due to Covid-19.

"Many support mechanisms have disintegrated or been cut. There's also many that have lost their jobs, don't have family around them and aren't able to get out."

While there was always a need in the South Auckland community, the impact of the coronavirus had caused a huge increase.

Items being delivered were reaching up to 1000 families a day.

Gange said the foundation was trying to alleviate the stress put on local marae, which people were turning to during the stressful times.

"They often don't have access to the internet or a phone so they reach out to the marae."

To keep providing the items, Gange said they needed continuous funding support.
