Funeral of man whose death sparked UK riots

13:46 pm on 10 September 2011

Hundreds of mourners gathered on Friday for the funeral of a man who was shot by police in north London - a death which was followed by riots across England.

The cortege of Mark Duggan left his parents' home and made its way through Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham for a private funeral.

A protest over his death on 4 August triggered four nights of disorder in London and other cities.

The death is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The family of Mr Duggan said on Thursday they had ''no faith'' in the commission's investigation.

The BBC reports Mr Duggan, 29, was a passenger in a minicab which was apparently stopped by police near Tottenham Hale Tube station.

An inquest heard he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A non-police issue handgun was recovered close to the scene.

The inquest into Mr Duggan's death has been adjourned until 12 December.
