Niue's Premier is hoping an agreement held with Polynesian Airlines will secure direct flights from Auckland to Niue when Virgin becomes involved with the service later this year.

The Premier, Young Vivian, has been holding talks in Samoa and Wellington about his concerns that the flights to Niue could become a feeder service via Apia once the joint venture, Polynesian Blue, begins operations.

The deal with Polynesian saw the flights underwritten by New Zealand in the event that they made a loss.

Mr Vivian says he's now waiting for some answers over the fate of the direct service.

"Well I'm still talking about it and exploring a number of things and it will take some time for us to iron out and a decision to be arrived at."
