The body was found yesterday evening in Onehunga.

Police immediately attended the scene after being notified of the body.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said the recycling workers called police, and officers had been at the scene since last night.

"What we're wanting to do is find the mother. We're really concerned that there could be some medical issues here, and whether she needs some help and support.

"So if people out there know who the mother is or their family or she is actually watching this, please contact us."

"Somebody knows who's been pregnant, is now no longer, and doesn't have the baby ... We want to get the support around here, family friends, and just make sure that she's OK."

Numerous enquiries are underway and police said they were prioritising identifying and locating the mother of the child.

They were extremely concerned for her welfare and worried that she needs urgent medical attention.

Hospitals have been contacted by police and they will continue to work closely with them.

A scene examination began overnight and continues today.

A post-mortem will be carried out tomorrow.
