Waka Kotahi said many vehicle owners had their cars inspected straight after last year's nationwide Covid-19 lockdown.

The vehicle industry expects this to create a flow-on effect, as a large volume of 12-monthly WoFs issued then will expire from next month.

The Association's advocacy and strategy manager Greig Epps said mechanics were currently seeing only 20 to 25 percent of the usual demand for warrants.

The transport agency says around 131,000 active vehicles were yet to renew their warrants following the lockdown.

Demand is expected to spike from May to July.
