Comedian's future uncertain after racist remarks

Comedian David Fane faces an uncertain future following controversy over anti-semitic jokes he made at a media function in Auckland.

At a private function in Auckland on Wednesday, Fane shocked the audience with comments which insulted Jews and people living with HIV.

Fane, known for his roles in Outrageous Fortune, Sione's Wedding and the Radiradirah comedy show, also co-hosts a breakfast show on Radio Flava which is owned by The Radio Network.

The Radio Network says it plans to make a public announcement on Monday after managers meet with Fane.

Its chief executive John McElhinney says Fane needs to publicly apologise.

TV3 has declined to comment saying Fane isn't a direct employee.

New Zealand Jewish Council president Stephen Goodman says the remarks were probably a misguided attempt at humour rather than hate-speech.

But, he says, a sincere public apology would be appropriate.

The Aids Foundation says all New Zealanders deserve an apology.
