13:45 pm on 22 March 2011

Samoa's new Justice Minister says she intends to look at a backlog in the courts system as her first order of business.

The Law Society says cases are waiting up to six months to go to court, with some even taking more than a year.

Fiame Naomi Mata'afa says she wants to review the law and justice sector plan to become more familiar with it.

"The challenges with the court systems is the backlog, and especially at the Lands and Titles Court. So I would really like to give some focus to that, and address some of the, what appear to be bottlenecks."

Fiame Naomi Mata'afa says she will meet representatives of the judicial sector this week.
