Computer hackers are easily able to access wireless internet connections in Auckland and Wellington, new research shows.
Internet safety group NetSafe says both North Island cities have low wireless security levels, as many residents and businesses use a weak form of modem encryption called WEP.
NetSafe representatives went 'wardriving' in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, which involves driving around with a wireless device to check security.
The group found Dunedin in the South Island was the most internet secure city, because many wireless users had stronger encryption codes, such as WAP2.
Netsafe executive director Martin Cocker says hackers can engage in criminal activity or download illegally through unsecured wireless connections.
Mr Cocker says internet users should check their connections.
