American Samoa filmmakers plan to share equipment

11:09 am on 16 August 2010

A workshop on film making has ended in American Samoa with participants pledging to share the limited production equipment available on the island to tell their stories.

The workshop was sponsored by Pacific Islanders in Communication, a Hawaii based organization that was formed to help increase the number of films produced by and for Pacific people.

The 15 participants produced a documentary based around the traditional headdress worn by a taupou or maiden, usually the daughter of the village's highest chief.

A programme manager for Pacific Islanders in Communication, Leanne Ferrer, says a major challenge for film and video producers in the territory is lack of production equipment.

But she says out of the workshop they identified who has equipment on the island.
