The death of a person in a crash in Christchurch last night has taken the Christmas and New Year road toll to nine.

The single-vehicle crash happened on Russley Road in Harewood about 10.45pm.
Earlier police said initial indications were that multiple people had sustained serious injuries. They later provided an update to say one person had died.
The road was closed last night temporarily, but has since reopened.
