Truce fails to halt Kiev clashes

08:47 am on 21 February 2014

Urkraine anti-government demonstrators and police continue to exchange blows in Kiev, as the death toll from the fighting tops 70.

Witnesses say many people died from single gunshot wounds, typical of sniper fire, the BBC reports.

The clashes come despite a truce agreed on Thursday between the president and opposition leaders

The Interior Ministry has urged residents of the city to stay indoors because the streets are "occupied by armed and aggressive people."

The BBC reports that video footage has emerged showing snipers firing on demonstrators who had been trying to retake their protest camp in Independence Square.

Witnesses report live rounds, petrol bombs and water cannon being used at Independence Square during recent clashes.

An opposition Twitter feed posted an image of 13 bodies in a makeshift mortuary in the lobby of the Hotel Ukraine.

The Interior Ministry says 67 police officers have been taken hostage by demonstrators.
