EU warns Pacific on economic reform

10:13 am on 12 August 2004

The European Union has issued a warning to Australia and other Pacific nations about how economic reforms are tackled in Solomons Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Speaking during the Pacific Islands Post Forum Dialogues in Apia, the head of the EU's Brussels-based Pacific Unit, commended the work of the Regional Assistance Mission in restoring law and order.

But Valeriano Diaz says RAMSI has to be careful how it approaches the next phase, such as the economic reforms.

"And there, we have expressed our concerns about the ownership. We think that in the process the ownership of the country has to be ensured; if they want the process to be sustainable. And that's also valid for the enhanced cooperation programme of Australia with PNG."
