Police are appealing for witnesses to Monday's incident in which a young person died when they were hit by a train in Mount Maunganui.
The person died after being struck by the freight train at a level crossing on Hewletts Road.
Police asked witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw a young person riding a bicycle in the area just before the incident at 2.50pm on Monday to call 105 or make a report online.
KiwiRail said its locomotive engineer had been offered counselling and was being supported to take time off work.
The death was being referred to the coroner.
