New Caledonians rally for new flag

18:10 pm on 11 March 2011

About 1,000 people in New Caledonia have joined a rally in support of the territory adopting a new flag as sign of a common identity.

This comes in response to a push by the pro-independence Caledonian Union for a law to make the joint use of both the French and the Kanak flags mandatory.

Last year, the idea was endorsed by Paris and the French prime minister, Francois Fillon, hoisted the two flags in Noumea officially for the first time.
