They said a 25-year-old man reported a pistol and rifle were stolen from a gun safe in his home last week.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nadene Richmond said they made inquiries but the man eventually admitted to hiding the firearms.

She said the pistol and gun - along with two other semi-automatic guns - were found in a ceiling cavity of a walk-in wardrobe in his home.

The man has been charged with making a false statement and will appear in the North Shore District Court on Friday.

Ms Richmond said the "overwhelming majority" of firearms holders had done the right thing under new gun laws but the incident reminded those who were avoiding it that they may face prosecution.

"The overwhelming majority of firearms holders have been doing the right thing under the new firearms legislation and we acknowledge their goodwill and cooperation.

"This prosecution also sends a message to the small minority who may choose not to comply - if they try to hide their firearms they can face prosecution. The risk is not worth it."

Ms Richmond said the firearms would be seized and destroyed and it's likely the 25-year-old will face further firearms charges.
