A person has died following an assault in Christchurch on Friday evening.
A 31-year-old man was earlier arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm in relation to the incident.
Police said officers were called to Linwood Avenue on Friday night after reports of an assault that had happened between 7:30pm and 7:50pm.
The victim was taken to Christchurch Hospital but has since died, police said in a statement today.
"Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this difficult time," police said.
The arrested man first appeared in Christchurch Court yesterday and was remanded in custody. He will next appear in court on 11 April.
Police said they anticipate further charges are likely in the case.
