Durable goods orders down

Orders for durable goods such as cars, machinery and fridges fell 4.2% in the United States in March, the sharpest drop in three years.

Official figures show nuch of the fall was due to an almost 50% drop in civil aircraft orders.

Excluding aircraft and defence goods, capital goods orders fell 0.8% and economists say the data points to weakening US growth in coming months.
