The leaders of the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Niue and Tokelau are to meet in New Zealand next week to discuss connecting to a broadband submarine cable.
The meeting was an initiative of the New Zealand Government but other parties, such as the Asian Development Bank were expected to be there.
The Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna and Finance Minister Mark Brown were also expected to attend.
Our Cook Islands correspondent said the government had considered various options for submarine cables over recent years.
