The desire for a genuine 'Kiwi experience' is encouraging visitors to go off the beaten track.

Baches are filling a gap in the market as an increasing number of tourists look beyond the traditional hot spots in search of an authentic "Kiwi' summer holiday.

Government statistics continue to break records with guest nights rising to more than 40 million in October - up 2.6 percent on the same time last year.
Bachcare Holiday Homes founder and managing director Leslie Preston said the company had barely scratched the surface with more than 2000 holiday homes currently on its books.
"It's a great way to move people beyond just the traditional hot spots," she said.
While the average cost per night is about $200, it can run upwards of ten times as much for the premium homes.
"They may come to a traditional area that they're used to," Ms Preston said.
"They then go bach to bach to other locations that have these amazing holiday homes in beautiful locations."
