The supply of water to the city of Wanganui has been restricted after a sudden failure in one of its bores.
A pump in one of the North Island city's three major bores has tripped out and the cause of the problem will not be known until next week.
The council says with only two major bores available, the water pressure to some homes and businesses in the Springvale and central city area has been lowered.
A ban on domestic sprinklers has also been put in place and the Fire Service has been asked not to test hydrants.
