Illegal Chinese nationals flee Nadi Airport to avoid deportation

09:26 am on 2 November 2002

Four Chinese nationals who entered Fiji illegally with fake papers and were awaiting deportation have fled from Nadi International Airport.

The Daily Post reports the incident comes just a week after another Chinese awaiting deportation fled from the airport in similar circumstances, resulting in claims of corruption at Nadi airport.

But quick action by some immigration officers prevented another five Chinese nationals from escaping after they tipped off police that moves were underway to let them loose.

The five, who were carrying fake documents are now in police custody.

The newspaper says to consolidate claims that big money is exchanging hands, an immigration source says the same officer who was responsible for the earlier escape was also in charge when the latest incident took place this week.
