Tonga's ministry of health has recorded its first typhoid case for the year.

Radio Tonga reports only one case was recorded in the whole of 2013 but it quotes the chief medical officer, Dr Malakai 'Ake, saying that overall there is a decline in cases of communicable disease.

The victim was admitted to Vaiola Hospital from the eastern district of Tongatapu.

Dr 'Ake says hygiene and sanitation are important in trying to avoid water borne diseases.
