New Year's Eve events planned for Mount Maunganui and Palmerston North have been cancelled because of bad weather.
The entertainment planned for Mount Maunganui's main beach will not take place.
A spokesperson for Tauranga City Council, Margaret Batchelar, says the Mount experienced high onshore winds on Friday and the forecast for Saturday is for similar conditions.
She says that has meant it was not safe to put up the stages needed for the evening's entertainment and the council made the call to cancel the event.
However, a fireworks display planned for the Tauranga side of the bridge that connects Mount Maunganui with the city will go ahead.
Ms Batchelar says up to 35,000 people have attended events at the beach in previous years.
Palmerston North's New Year's Eve in the Square event that was due to get underway at 5.30pm on Saturday has also been cancelled.
