Police in New Caledonia have arrested four young men after a police vehicle was stoned and a policeman seriously injured.
The attack occurred in the small town of Thio on the east coast at the weekend when police followed a stolen car.
According to the police, a total of 36 rocks were hurled at the police vehicle, with one weighing almost two kilogrammes.
One officer was hit in the face and broke several bones.
Police say more arrests will follow.
The public prosecutor says the situation in New Caledonia is extremely worrying because police now get attacked about once every three days.
