Japan silent about Fiji attending Hokkaido summit with Pacific leaders

Japan is refusing to say whether it has invited Fiji for talks with other Pacific Island countries in Hokkaido in two weeks.

The meeting, the Pacific Alliance Leaders' Meeting, is organised in conjunction with the Pacific Islands Forum, and usually involves leaders of the Forum's 14 island members.

An official at the Japanese Embassy in Suva says they have been in talks with the Fiji Foreign Ministry about Fiji attending the PALM meeting, but would not confirm whether the military-led regime would be allowed to attend.

The Chairman of the Forum, Niue's Toke Talagi, is to jointly chair the PALM meeting with the Japanese prime minister, Taro Aso.

Last weekend, the Forum suspended Fiji over the military led regime's refusal to hold elections this year.
