Two doctors have left Israel for Nauru on the first-ever Israeli mission to examine and treat the local population.

The Jerusalem Post says the government of Nauru asked Israel's Foreign Ministry to find doctors willing to take part in such a project.

The Israel Medical Association says a couple, he a pediatric surgeon and she a pediatrician and deputy medical director, will be in Nauru for two months.

She will give advice on health promotion and disease prevention and pediatric care, while he will perform surgery on the island, whose children make up more than half the population.
