Two women are dead following a head on crash on State Highway Three just north of New Plymouth this afternoon.

Police said the drivers were the sole occupants of the vehicles and although first aid was given both women were pronounced dead at the scene.
Ambulance, Fire, and Police attended the scene at about 11.45am after being contacted by a member of the public.
A scene examination was underway and the road was closed, with diversions in place.
New Plymouth Police and the Serious Crash Unit were investigating.
Police have yet to release names of the women and said the deaths would be referred to the Coroner.
