The New Zealand Transport Agency is warning users of State Highway 2 in Wellington that it will be closing the Remutaka Hill at night while maintenance work is done.
A full week of night closures will be happening from 9pm to 4am Sunday, 26 February through Friday, 3 March.
The road will be fully closed to traffic during this time.
Waka Kotahi said seven sections of the road need to be resurfaced and made safer for road users.
It said the regular night closures would significantly reduce the number of daytime disruptions for road users.
Road crews could also complete a large amount of work safely during these closures because multiple crews can work across the hill simultaneously without disrupting traffic, it said.
Waka Kotahi said there will be a limited number of escorted crossings, but bookings are essential.
Only two time slots available, one in each direction.
If travellers do not book ahead, they are likely to be turned away, the transport agency said.
Emergency services will also still have access to the road while the work is carried out.
