The wallaby control fence on the outskirts of Rotorua is among tools to try and stop the Dama and Pama wallaby from spreading beyond a 260,000ha containment area.

Also in the armoury of those trying to control the pest are surveillance cameras, indicator dogs, a public reporting campaign, guns and poison.

It's feared, if not controlled, the wallabies could cover a third of the North Island by 2065, threatening forests and farmland.

Country Life got an update from Bay of Plenty biosecurity officer in charge of wallaby control Dale Williams at the fenceline on SH5.
