The earthquakes in Canterbury are still deterring international visitors from staying in the region.

The number of nights guests spent in commercial accommodation in the South Island fell for the 12th consecutive month in July, Statistics New Zealand figures released on Monday show.

Canterbury recorded a 20% decrease, the largest regional fall.

Nationally, total guest nights rose 2% in July compared with the same month last year, as more visitors stayed in the North Island.
