A 43-year-old man has been remanded in custody over an alleged assault that left a person critically injured.
He appeared at the Manukau District Court this morning charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. If convicted, he could face up to 14 years' prison.
It follows emergency services finding a person in a critical condition in Batty Road in Karaka, South Auckland, yesterday.
Two of the defendant's family members sat in the gallery today as he appeared before Judge Kiriana Tan.
Judge Tan granted the man interim name suppression and declined bail.
The judge denied his application to be released on bail.
He was remanded without plea until his next appearance in court later this month on 27 January.
The summary of facts and details about the victim are also suppressed.
Both the defendant and the person who suffered the injuries were given interim name suppression.
RNZ understands the injured person remains in critical condition but is expected to survive.
Police declined further comment because the case is now before the courts.
