The police have charged a man after a serious road rage incident in Auckland at the weekend.

On Saturday night, a 49-year-old man had a fight with the driver of another car.

The police said both men pulled over on the Albany Highway and it appeared the injured man was carried on the bonnet of the other car and then run over.

Detective Sergeant James Bolton said a 22-year-old had been charged with failing to stop to ascertain injury.

He is expected to appear in the North Shore District Court on Friday.

Mr Bolton said the police received a number of calls from members of the public following the incident.

He said more charges cannot be ruled out.

The injured man remains in Auckland City Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
