848 tonnes of explosives missing in India

05:59 am on 28 August 2010

Police in India are investigating the disappearance of 848 tonnes of mining company explosives in recent months. Hundreds of thousands of detonators are also missing.

About 164 truckloads, sent to Madhya Pradesh from the neighbouring state of Rajasthan, have failed to arrive since May.

Police suspect the involvement of illegal mining outfits, but fear that some explosives may have fallen into the hands of militants.

The BBC reports two men have been arrested and rewards have been offered for five others.
