Memorial service for student swept off rock

A memorial service is being held on Saturday for a young man who was one of three people swept into the sea off Paritutu Rock on the New Plymouth coast four months ago.

17-year-old Spotswood College student Stephen Kahukaka-Gedyewent missing along with Brazilian exchange student Filipe Milo and their instructor, Bryce Jourdain, while on a school rock-climbing trip.

The bodies of Mr Jourdain and Mr Kahukaka-Gedye have never been found.

Stephen's father, Bruce Gedye, says the memorial will bring some closure for friends and family.

Mr Gedye says he has not completely stopped looking for his son but the coroner and the police have advised him it is highly unlikely he will find anything.

The memorial service was due to be held at New Plymouth's TSB stadium.
