Man arrested after Ōtara students 'violently' attacked

12:33 pm on 8 June 2019

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an attack on a group of high school students in Ōtara last week.

Police said two students were injured and a vehicle was damaged in the incident.

They said a man was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and causing intentional damage.

The principal of Tangaroa College, Davida Suasua, posted a message to parents on social media about the attack, describing how three students were "violently and randomly" attacked by a group of young men.

"No-one was stabbed like the media has incorrectly reported, nor is it related to any incident that has happened within our community over the past few months," Mr Suasua wrote on the school's Facebook page.

"Our students who were injured in the attack are recovering well, prayers and well wishes to them and their families. We have a guidance team available for anyone who requires support.

"It is now time for us to gather and restore normality. As a community we need to work together as we have a shared responsibility."

The alleged attacker is to appear in the Manukau District Court next week.
