Tribal attack claim in PNG over environmental payments

16:43 pm on 19 March 2014

An environmental watchdog in Papua New Guinea says there has been a tribal attack over environmental payments from ExxonMobil's liquefied natural gas project.

Stanley Mamu from Papua New Guinea LNG Watch says a payment from ExxonMobil was supposed to be distributed among South clans, but not all clans were paid.

Mr Mamu says the angry clans attacked the man responsible for distributing the payments, and his family.

"Those people who never recieved that money, went to his house, seeked for money, asked for money, for that environmental payment, they throw spears and guns, shoot guns at each other, but I don't know how much were injured."

Stanley Mamu says he doesn't have any information on the man's injuries, but he says people are arguing over not being paid enough from the project.

Australia's Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, is to be briefed on the project, which is understood to be ahead of schedule, when he visits Papua New Guinea this week.
