Auckland Council is calling for submissions on whether it should petition the government to ban the sale of fireworks in the city.
Councillor Linda Cooper said Aucklanders were split between those who loved Guy Fawkes and setting off fireworks on 5 November, and those who prefer sleep, or worry about safety and animal well-being.
The council is reviewing the Public Safety and Nuisance Bylaw and wants to hear public views on the issue by 5 December.
"There seems to be a bit of a ground-swell of the public saying, 'let's ban private sales'," Ms Cooper said.
"So let's ask the question: Do you think we should advocate to the government to ban private sales?"
Public fireworks displays would still be allowed if the council gets the go-ahead from locals and the government agrees.
