Strong group of women MPs in Fiji

A women's leader in Fiji says there's a strong group of women in parliament but more are needed.

Eight women have been elected to the 50-member house taking women's representation in Fiji above the regional average of 13 percent.

Sharon Bhagwan Rolls of Femlink Pacific says the women elected represent experience, traditional leadership and youth and there are some complete newcomers to politics too.

"These are women who are very aware, very knowledgable from their own experiences and we're looking forward to working with all of them as well as who were candidates as well because we now have this very strong cadre of women who have emerged through the political process."

Sharon Bhagwan Rolls says the single national constituency did not mean a level playing field for women and there's still a need for temporary special measures to boost representation.
