PNG Higher Education minister seeks review of grading system

21:30 pm on 14 July 2005

Papua New Guinea's minister for Higher Education is seeking a review of a grading system at the heart of angry student protests at the University of PNG.

A clash between the university and students remains unresolved after a day of high-level talks at the university between the administration, students, and government ministers.

This follows a rampage by up to 300 students on Monday who lost patience while waiting to speak to the University Vice-Chancellor Professor Leslie Eastcott, and torched the university-owned vehicles.

The students are angry about a tough grading system and numerous other issues.

The Higher Education Minister, Brian Pulayasi, says he's not convinced either way on the grading row and wants details.

"I really would like to see the first semester results so I can be able to make a realy valid position that is dependent on the data that is available. whether the students deserve to get As and we don't need to have the grade modified to a certain limit."

Mr Pulayasi says he will get an independent party to review the grading system
