Free popcorn protest to support cinema workers

13:30 pm on 7 July 2018

Unite Union will hand out free popcorn outside Hoyts Cinemas today to support workers threatened with being locked out if they strike.

The union said Hoyts workers had been told they must accept an offer that puts them on the minimum wage - which is $16.50 an hour.

The union hoped that handing out the popcorn would highlight the low wages for workers, compared to a $19.00 film ticket.

Unite Union said its members had been told that even a one minute strike would result in a month-long lockout.

Popcorn will be handed out at Hoyts cinemas in Auckland, Hamilton, and Christchurch this afternoon.
