Cruise ship official suspended after Guam pier rammed

15:04 pm on 10 January 2019

Reports from Guam say a cruise ship official has been suspended amid suspected alcohol abuse after a vessel rammed into a pier last month.

The Nippon Maru rammed into the U.S. Navy's fuel pier on Guam nearly two weeks ago.

Japan-based Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line said the company was aware of a report of alcohol use on the day of the accident, according to the paper.

The company said the master in charge of manoeuvring had been suspended and an investigation was underway.

More than 600 passengers and crew were on board at the time of the crash as the vessel was leaving Guam for Saipan on the evening of December 30.

The Guam Daily Post reported the collision punched a 1.5 by 2 metre hole through the hull of the stern, just above the water line.

There were no injuries.

The passenger ship remains docked at the Guam port, with a skeleton crew on board, until repairs are completed.

All the passengers were flown back to Japan after the accident, the Guam Daily Post reported.
