American Samoa Governor stopped by courts from spending unbudgetted money

19:10 pm on 3 August 2010

American Samoa's Governor Togiola Tulafono and Treasurer Magalei Logovi'i have been stopped from spending unbudgeted public funds on the Samoan Heritage Week celebrations in Hawaii.

The preliminary injunction is based on a stipulated agreement between Senator Velega Savali and the two leaders.

Governor Togiola had submitted a bill appropriating $50 thousand US dollars for the event the day before the Fono went into a three week recess.

But under the stipulated agreement no money will be spent without approval.

The celebration is due to go ahead from next Sunday.
