Report recommends look at Kohanga governance

19:26 pm on 11 December 2014

A working party set up to investigate how the Kohanga movement should move forward has revealed its recommendations to up to 1500 supporters.

About half a dozen recommendations were identified by the group appointed in April this year. It has been talking with kohanga reo across the motu about what they want for Maori pre-schools.

A spokesperson for the movement's National Trustboard, Derek Fox, said a copy of the report was delivered to kohanga before today's hui at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawaahia so supporters could question the board and working party.

He said the party recommended addressing its governance.

Mr Fox said one model suggested that a board be made up of seven or 12 members for an election process and for members to be rotated.

Derek Fox said the report also identified a desire to get back around the table with the Government to address Waitangi Tribunal recommendations.

Supporters would have time to think about the recommendations, he said, and next year the board planned to tour around the country visiting kohanga and discussing what should happen.
