Education Minister Hekia Parata said the suburb was fast-growing and population growth was expected to generate about 4000 additional pupils by 2020.

Ms Parata said Takanini was a sought-after area because of special housing and private land development.

The school for Years 1 to 8 is to be located on Walters Road and will open in 2017.
