Auckland City CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Ash Matthews said a man was found unresponsive following an assault.

"After receiving medical assistance, he died at the scene," Matthews said.

"Police are working hard to establish exactly what has occurred and who is responsible."

Raju Patel, who works at Valonia Dairy across the road from the scene, said the area is usually safe and quiet.

Patel said the restaurant is not usually busy.

"That place is very quiet, you know, and there's not much happening up there, and not many customers either, so a very quiet place."

Patel closed his shop around 7pm last night, six hours before the homicide took place.

He said, when he arrived into work this morning, the cordon was fully established.

"I was trying to ask the policeman across the road... I wanted to know what happened."

Patel said the restaurant used to be quite popular, featuring a TAB, pub, and bottle shop at the one location.

He said, back then, the establishment was robbed many times.

A scene examination is being carried out and a cordon remains in place around the restaurant.
