The Survivor Experiences Service (SES) is expanding to include a records support function from today intended to make requesting, receiving and understanding care records easier for people who have been abused in care.
The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care ended last month, finding at least 200,000 people were abused or neglected by faith-based institutions in New Zealand since 1950.
SES Executive Director Polly Martin said the process of accessing records can be distressing and that people need support during the process.
Survivors have had to themselves identify which organisations may hold records about them and then make requests.
