All three New Zealand Indycar drivers finished in the top 10 but missed out on the podium at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix on Monday as Alex Palou tightened his grip on the championship.

Scott Dixon was fourth, Scott McLaughlin was seventh and Marcus Armstrong was eighth but nobody could stop Spaniard Palou winning his sixth career race.

After a seventh yellow flag, Palou pulled away in his Honda with five laps left and beat Australian Will Power's Chevrolet by 1.1843 seconds. Felix Rosenqvist finished third.

Palou, who was the pole-sitter, is now 51 points clear of Marcus Ercsson at the top of the table while Dixon is fourth and McLaughlin seventh.

Seventeenth-ranked Armstrong holds onto his lead as the championship's top rookie.

The race was held on the streets of downtown Detroit for the first time since 1991.

"It was a really busy race, honestly, but we had a really fast car," Palou said.

"We were really good on the first stint. I think we did the right strategy of just pushing."
